Toronto residents are lacing up their sneakers thanks to a new citywide fitness initiative aimed at promoting outdoor activity and healthy living. The campaign, called ‘MoveTO’, combines free programming with social media challenges to get people moving in parks, trails, and community spaces.

Backed by the City of Toronto and several health partners, MoveTO includes guided walking tours, outdoor yoga, and cardio bootcamps held in public parks. Sessions are led by certified instructors and are open to participants of all ages and fitness levels.

A key feature of the initiative is its accessibility. Events are offered in multiple languages and are scheduled throughout the week, including early mornings and evenings to accommodate different schedules. No registration is required, making it easy to drop in and participate.

The city has also partnered with local gyms and wellness brands to provide fitness equipment giveaways and discounts on health-related products. These incentives aim to sustain momentum beyond the launch period and build long-term healthy habits.

City officials say the initiative is a response to the pandemic’s toll on physical and mental health. “We want to make it easier for residents to reconnect with their bodies and communities after years of isolation,” said Deputy Mayor Dianne Wong.

To boost engagement, MoveTO features a weekly photo challenge where participants can post snapshots of their workouts with the hashtag #MoveTOChallenge. Winners receive fitness trackers, branded merchandise, or personal training vouchers.

Local influencers and athletes have also joined the campaign to inspire broader participation. Their videos and posts help demonstrate that fitness doesn’t require expensive gear or memberships—just motivation and a safe, open space.

Special consideration has been given to equity. Free transit tokens are available for participants traveling to events, and designated programming for seniors and people with disabilities ensures that no one is left behind.

With strong early turnout and growing buzz online, organizers hope MoveTO becomes a permanent fixture in the city’s health and recreation landscape. Evaluations are already underway to assess impact and explore future expansions.
